Outlining the Bible

My friend Tony (kingdombard.wordpress.com) moved into a new office this week and during the move a tree mysteriously appeared in his new office.  I said it must be the Joshua tree and then tried to remember the Scripture that went with it.  I could remember the story but not enough detail to find it and since I had the wrong type of tree searching didn’t help either.  What does this have to do with outlining the Bible?  When reading I tend to rush, making it easy to forget a lot of the specifics, remembering only the general plot but if I am building an outline I need to make conscious decisions on what points are major headings, what the subheadings should be and so on.  That will force me to slow down and contemplate what I’m reading.

Joshua 1:8 (NLT)
Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.

Tony had been talking about outlining one book of the Bible every Month and this was the push I needed.  There are 50 chapters in Genesis so that works out to be about two chapters a day for this Month; I don’t know what book I will go to after that maybe one of the Epistles.  By the way, if you are wondering about the tree, we did find out where it came from and the Biblical tree I was thinking of was the Juniper or Broom Tree.

1 Kings 19:4-6 (NLT)
Then he went on alone into the wilderness, traveling all day. He sat down under a solitary broom tree and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life, for I am no better than my ancestors who have already died.”  Then he lay down and slept under the broom tree. But as he was sleeping, an angel touched him and told him, “Get up and eat!” He looked around and there beside his head was some bread baked on hot stones and a jar of water! So he ate and drank and lay down again.

Heavenly Father,
Your Scriptures are full of wisdom and I am hungry for deeper understanding.  I long to hear your voice; as you reveal yourself to me through your Word.  Speak to me Lord as I meditate on the Truth you have given to us in this book.  This I ask in Jesus name.
